Phased Deep Retrofits

The Building America Partnership for Improved Residential Construction (PIRC) team is pursuing a phased residential energy efficiency retrofit program for the U.S. Department of Energy. This research aims find out how energy efficiency in existing U.S. residences can be improved. A total of 60 Florida homes have been audited and equiped with detailed energy end-use monitoring equipment. 45 homes have recieved simple low-cost, pass-through efficiency measures such as efficient lighting, hot water tank wraps and pipe insulation and smart power strips. Ten homes have recieved more extensive retrofits including insulation upgrades, duct sealing, heat pump water heaters and Energy Star clothes washers and refrigerators. Energy use data has been obtained for at least six months before and after the retrofits to establish the impacts on annual energy and peak energy reductions from the technologies.

The date ranges for data monitoring varied by home. Most homes were monitored from the end of 2012 through 2016.
